Darren Shan
Cirque Du Freak Series
12 Novels
Summary:
Darren Shan and his best friend, Steve, get tickets to the Cirque Du Freak, a wonderfully gothic freak show featuring weird, frightening half human/half animals who interact terrifyingly with the audience. In the midst of the excitement, true terror raises its head when Steve recognizes that one of the performers-- Mr. Crepsley-- is a vampire!
Steve remains after the show finishes to confront the vampire-- but his motives are surprising! In the shadows of a crumbling theater, a horrified Darren eavesdrops on his friend and the vampire, and is witness to a monstrous, disturbing plea. As if by destiny, Darren is pulled to Mr. Crepsley and what follows is his forrifying descent into the dark and bloody world of vampires.
This is Darren's story.
My Review:
The first book in the series is not very well written. I read the series when I was in 6th grade, and because I had loved it so much, I decided to reread it in 10th. I opened up the first book and could hardly get past page 50. The only thing that kept me going was the knowledge that is does get better. Don't get me wrong, this is definitely a teen novel. But, the series truly is a wonderful read. Unlike many series today, it is mostly original in many aspects. The plots and characters are not easily comparable to other novels. I definitely recommend this series to anyone and everyone. It doesn't matter if this isn't the typical genre you read, because the ending is so unpredictable it makes the entire series worthwhile.
